L.A. EYEWORKS.

Eyeglasses l.a. Eyeworks: unique and inimitable.
“We design eyewear to celebrate the diversity of faces and the uniqueness of individuals. The eyewear we produce are sparks of our imagination. You complete these thoughts and bring the dreams of l.a.Eyeworks to life.”
– Barbara McReynolds & Gai Gherardi

l.a.Eyeworks eyewear began on September 9, 1979 when Barbara McReynolds and Gai Gherardi opened a single store on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles, California. The original idea of this adventure? Challenging the prevailing canons of eyewear for a new, provocative facial revelation.

McReynolds and Gherardi both grew up in the beach community of Huntington Beach, becoming inseparable friends in high school. After a training period working in the most legendary optical stores in California they launched l.a.Eyeworks with a mission to "encourage people to stop looking and start seeing."

Original, often iconoclastic and always invigorating, eyeglasses designed by l.a.Eyeworks are instantly recognizable by their bold shapes, imaginative handling of materials and expressive use of color. Although l.a.Eyeworks has graced the faces of celebrities, artists, and athletes, the deeper intention is for "everyone to find a frame that fits not fashion sensibilities but their own."

l.a. Eyeworks prices are in the range of €350 to €500. These glasses are handcrafted in Japan from the highest quality cellulose acetates with colorations made exclusively for the brand. One part of the collection is made from thin and strong high-density acetates while another part is recognizable by its distinctly retro spirit revisited, thick acetate sheets with hinges assembled by riveting.

Among the most sought-after models are: the l.a.Eyeworks Blakey which has a small rectangular shape and the l.a.Eyeworks Sand Dab with a wide rectangular shape both constructed with high-density acetate; the l.a.Eyeworks Fotini with a soft rectangular shape and the l.a.Eyeworks Ivar with a soft square shape both constructed with thick acetate and riveted hinges and a revisited retro mood.

In addition to innovative eyewear designs, l.a.Eyeworks has left an indelible mark on the look and language of what an eyewear company can be. An abiding love for artists has been the genesis of an ongoing series of in-store exhibitions, event programming and commissioned work, including a series of artist-designed cleaning cloths. Since 1981, the brand's portrait advertising campaign, photographed by Greg Gorman, has featured an eclectic mix of more than 200 high-profile celebrities and lesser-known cultural provocateurs in an ever-evolving series of stunning black-and-white images anchored by the legendary tagline,

"A face is like a work of art. It deserves a great frame."
